The Ontario government announced yesterday that they will now fund smoking cessation products and services for those undergoing addictions counseling. In a partnership with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), the Ontario government will provide a 5 week course of nicotine replacement therapies and counseling, follow up counseling, advice and assistance, and access to the Smoker’s Helpline.
Pharmacists in Ontario are also eligible for payments from the Ontario government for providing smoking cessation services to those covered by the Ontario Drug Benefit. In this program, pharmacists are reimbursed for up to 9 counseling sessions, including a readiness assessment, over the course of 365 days.
Do you feel adequately prepared to counsel patients who are also undergoing drug or alcohol addictions? Is 5 weeks of nicotine replacement therapy an acceptable length of treatment?
