In the UK, around 67% of smokers report wanting to quit, while only 26% report making a quit attempt in the previous year. Currently, the UK National Health Service (NHS) provides stop smoking services (SSS) to support cessation, although only 8% of smokers wanting to quit in England access the NHS SSS. The authors of this study developed a nationally distributed self-help kit for smoking cessation (Quit Kit), which was delivered to around 480 000 individuals. Of these, 2347 were randomly interviewed, of which the majority (61%) found the Quit Kit to be helpful with quitting smoking. Additionally, 84% claimed to be more likely to consider the NHS as a resource for smoking cessation after opening the Quit Kit. Furthermore, 29%, 17% and 11% reported visiting their doctor, pharmacist or stop-smoking service respectively as a result of receiving the kit. These results suggest that distributing such a kit at a national level would inspire more quit attempts and thus aid smoking cessation.
