The relative risk for bladder cancer from tobacco smoking is higher than reported than previous studies. Researchers found that smokers were 2.2% more likely to develop bladder cancer than non-smokers. Also, 50% of bladder cancer risk in men and women can be attributed to current or past smoking. This may be because of the changing composition of cigarettes–many have cut back tar and nicotine but have loaded them with carcinogens like beta-napthaylamine which is known to increase bladder cancer risk.
