Pharmacists who are part of BC’s Medication Management Program (MMP) will soon be able to continue building their MMP practice with provision of smoking cessation services to their patients.

On May 9th, 2011, BC Premiere Christy Clark announced that starting September 30, 2011 the province is planning to:

1) Make nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) available to ALL British Columbian smokers at no cost.

2) Cover the cost of prescription drugs for smoking cessation for British Columbians who are registered with Fair PharmaCare.

Details of the program, and any updates will be released over the next several weeks.  The most current information can be found on the PharmaCare website (www.health.gov.bc.ca/pharmacare/stopsmoking.html)

The current computer program utilized by pharmacies for the BCMMP is capable of documenting tobacco use status at this time, which will help identify potential smoking cessation patients before the fall changes take place.

For those pharmacists interested, there will be Smoking Cessation Best Practice Sessions offered Sept 19-22.
