The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention has announced that they are starting a $54 million telelvision, radio, and print campaign aimed at showing smokers the darker side of addiction. In the ads, smokers who have been hard-hit by the side effects of smoking, such as those with cancer and tracheotomies are featured. The program is an attempt to get at least 50,000 American smokers to quit.
Advocates of the program say that a jolt is needed for the public who are tired of hearing the same messages from the government. Critics of the ads say that some of the images may be so disturbing that people will turn away from them rather than listen to the message.
Do you think these graphic ads are enough to convince smokers to quit? Do you think Canadian smokers will be affected by the ads they see on American TV?
